What Actually Happens at a Head Spa (And Why It's Not Just a Fancy Shampoo)

If you've been curious about head spas but aren't quite sure what actually happens when you walk through the door, you're not alone. It's one of the questions we hear most often at Cosh, usually followed by some version of "is it basically just a really nice shampoo?"

It's not. Here's exactly what to expect.

When You Walk In

The first thing you'll notice is the scent. We diffuse a blend of citrus and white tea throughout the space, and it sets the tone immediately: unhurried, clean, calming. You'll be greeted at the door, invited to take a seat on our waiting bench, and offered your choice of water or tea along with a warm hand towel to freshen up with.

It's a small thing, but it's intentional. From the moment you arrive, everything is designed to help you shift gears.

The Consultation

When your specialist is ready for you, you'll be guided to your station. We'll take your coat and hang it, and store your personal items in the cabinet at your station so you're not sitting with a bag in your lap for an hour.

Then we start with a consultation, and this is where Cosh is different from a regular salon visit.

Before we touch your hair, we take time to understand your scalp. We'll ask about your concerns, your current routine, and anything you've been noticing. Then we use a trichoscope, a specialized scalp imaging device, to take a close look at your scalp at a level you can't see in the mirror. We review the findings together so you understand what's actually going on before the service begins.

From there, we cover what we call the Three Fighting Pandas: your scalp type, your ideal shampoo frequency, and which products are right for you. The products we use in your treatment are selected specifically for your scalp, not a default formula applied to everyone.

The Treatment

Once the consultation is complete, your specialist explains each step of the service so you know exactly what's coming. Then the treatment begins.

Depending on which service you've booked, this could include scalp massage, exfoliation, gua sha, steam, a hair mask, red light therapy, or more. Every service includes a thorough scalp analysis, a relaxing massage, a double shampoo, conditioning, and a rough dry. The more intensive services layer additional steps on top of that foundation.

You don't have to do anything except relax.

After the Treatment

When the service is complete, your specialist will do a post-treatment scalp check and walk you through their observations and recommendations. We'll help you gather your things and guide you to the front desk.

There, our Client Care Coordinator will review the specialist's recommendations with you, give you your wellness card, a record of your scalp analysis and what was found today, and check you out. If there are products or follow-up services that would help, we'll let you know. Nothing is pushed. Everything is explained.

What to Book If It's Your First Time

We recommend the Detox for most first-time clients. Here's why: the majority of people have never exfoliated their scalp before. Product residue, accumulated sebum, and dead skin cells can build up at the scalp surface and follicle openings without you even noticing, gradually affecting how your scalp breathes and functions, in ways that at-home washing doesn't fully address. The Detox is the first service tier in our menu that includes exfoliation, giving us the ability to go beyond surface cleansing and begin addressing buildup at the follicular level, helping your scalp return to a healthier baseline.

It's a 1 hour 15 minute service that includes scalp analysis, massage, exfoliation, gua sha, double shampoo, hydrating hair mask, steam, conditioning, rough dry, and a post-treatment check.

Most clients tell us they didn't realize how much their scalp needed it until they experienced it.

The Short Answer

A head spa is not a fancy shampoo. It's a scalp-focused treatment built around understanding your specific scalp: what it needs, what it's been dealing with, and how to bring it back into balance. The relaxation is real, but the results are the point.

If you've been on the fence, this is your sign.

Not sure which service is right for you? Every treatment starts with a consultation. We'll take a look and make a recommendation based on what your scalp actually needs.
